Although you won’t actually “lose your accent in 28 days” this is a good program for people who want to learn to pronounce American English VOWEL & CONSONANT sounds more clearly. The CD-ROM showing the mouth and lip positions for each consonant and vowel sound is an excellent feature and the exercises on the audio CD provide practice in connected speech.

Customers have commented that the book does not  contain enough information and that there are not enough lessons on stress and intonation. I would have to agree with that.  If you don’t want the CD-ROM showing the mouth and lip positions, Mastering the American Accent is a much better value.

Other accent reduction books just show you pictures and descriptions, but you’ll never understand it unless you are studying with native speaker. From the first moment I heard these everyday conversations put to classic jazz music, I knew that I would be using Jazz Chants as long as I was involved in ESL. As the author of American Accent Training, I use Jazz Chants in conjunction with Dr. Seuss for a well-rounded accent program. The songs are catchy, and students find that the rhythms and patterns become ingrained in their memories far more effectively than with text study. They are constantly amazed that “Americans really talk this way!” and “I can actually hear the speech music!” Mere words cannot convey what a wonderful series of exercises this is. Carolyn Graham is a musical genius.

I have used various Carolyn Graham books and CD’s and they are all great. I am partial to this one– especially for adult learners. I use the CD with the book.
The way it is structured each chapter has 5 or 6 short chants (conversational readings) about one topic. For example, there is a set of readings on apologizing with appropriate responses from the other person. (e.g. “Excuse me.” “That’s all right.”) The language is varied and very much the way American’s speak. There are lots of idiomatic expressions from everyday conversation. The two parts are separated– one voice indented– so each can be used by half the class at a time. Or in pairs after they have practiced. I like it for my adult students because the conversations are so practical for them.

Reading the book and listening to the CD make me feel that the author truly understands my issues and frustrations. The book demonstrates each pronunciation with practice words and sentences which are simple and easily understood. Those practice words and sentences showed me that I have been pronouncing words incorrectly but wouldn’t have known this otherwise. Moreover, I can apply those examples immediately in my daily conversations.

The other merit of this book that I really like is that this book goes beyond the pronunciation. It also teaches you the rules of which word and syllable need to be stressed and which are not. I’ve been applying these rules. I feel that those rules have helped my intonation when I speak. I learned a lot about how Americans link words together. I use to pronounce thing word by word. This made my speech sound artificial. I love the exercises on linking. You cannot sound like a native speaker is you don’t link words.

This is the 3rd similar book I have bought in the past few years and this one hands down is the most useful for me because of how easy it is to follow. I have been an American English speaker for the past 15 years and am always looking for ways to sound more “American” and I am amazed at how much I have learned just by reading a few chapters. There are things that I haven’t seen any other similar books mention like “Linking words in American”. I highly recommend this book for beginners and advanced speakers just trying to perfect their American accent.

Charles does a terrific job of explaining how to articulate all of the American English vowel & consonant sounds. He also teaches  you how to use syllable stress, intonation patterns and linking. These are key concepts that you must learn if you want to speak smooth and fluent American English. I have used these lessons and I am very impressed with them!

Students like this course because you can listen to the lessons while you are doing other things. Charles has a nice mellow voice that lets you absorb the sounds and patterns of English while you drive, exercise or work on the computer.
